TP-Link 150Mbps TL-WR702N Travel Router

Let’s start with the reason I even decided to pick up a travel router. First off I don’t do nearly enough traveling to constitute one or so you would think. I picked one up so that I didn’t have to buy an expensive regular router for my dorm, because the Wi-Fi was garbage and they only had one Ethernet port per room when I bought it. Seriously who puts one Ethernet connection in a college dorm? Either way they have been doing an upgrade of the internet situation on the campus so all is well. Except I can no longer use a router through he Ethernet (sad face). All is not lost since I have been finding myself in need of it outside the dorm. When I go to a local café or at the airport (rarely happens for me) I use it as a bridge  which lets me set my own password that way I don’t have to directly connect to the public Wi-Fi, which nearly graveyard my older laptop with bluescreens and all that jazz.

As a travel router it should be a given that it’s small in size but to my surprise it was extremely light. Its small enough to put in your pocket of course that depends on the pants, if they say no then you’re out of luck. Its 57 x 57 x 18mm (2.2 x 2.2 x 0.7 in.) and weighs less than your average smart phone. Essentially it is an excellent travel size and can fit just about any wear you can find room in your bag.

It sports one Ethernet port that supports 10/100Mbps so don’t expect some crazy fast speeds you won’t find it here. It comes with a micro-USB port which you can connect to a power brick or to a computer or other devise that charges through USB which really comes in handy since most of the time I use my (enter shameless plug) Anker External Battery to power it. It also helps if you just want to change setting to the router, you only need the router, included Ethernet cable and the USB cable. Now if you find yourself in a bind and messed up somewhere in the configuration of the router like I have done multiple times worry not because it does exist, the all-powerful reset button. I’ve used this feature more times than I care to count but at least I know I can fix my mistakes with the push of a button.

It being an inexpensive router it sends data over a 2.4GHz frequency at speeds up to 150Mbps which fits your average needs to send an email or doing simple tasks like browsing internet stories etc. Now that is not to say you can’t use this to game with because you can just don’t expect to win a lot especially with all that data that has to be sent while playing and to add to that if you are sharing that signal with other devise well… yeah it works but maybe not to a degree that you will be comfortable with. On another not it can keep up with shows and movies so you don’t really have to worry to much about it buffering every two seconds.

Now the interface is set up in a straight forward manner you have your basic settings which is what you will be using majority of the time or if you are really knowledgeable then you will probably get into the advanced settings. There is a maintenance section that holds the system tools like rebooting for when you have changed settings or if you want to reset it. One thing I really like about this system is that along the right side of the screen there is a section dedicated to descriptions of the various options that you have access to within the tab you are currently on. Which can make it reasonably easy for someone with very little knowledge, set the router to how they want it.

With a price point of $19.99 US on amazon as of the time of this post I think it is a nice solution for securing internet space on a public network for your own use and in some cases can save you money if you have to pay per connection like at some airports. If you need a cheap solution for internet connectivity then I would suggest this router to you. I have been really happy with this purchase and it has and continues to work really well for me. If you are interested here is an amazon non-affiliate link here.
